During the First World War, the German occupier built a defense line of bunkers and trenches, the so-called Antwerp-Turnhoutstellung. This line runs from Antwerp over the Noorderkempen to Turnhout and was documented by a series of German aerial photographs from 1918. On the basis of these photographs, Ghent University examined the state of preservation of the above-ground remains of this military infrastructure.

Information session in Stabroek

Through a series of information sessions in various municipalities, the Heritage Service of the Province of Antwerp is highlighting not only the historical value of this military infrastructure, but also its possibilities for recreational use. Each time, a different landscape type and therefore also a different preservation of the infrastructure are highlighted. The aim here is always to address the local population about which remains can be found in their municipality. After the first session in Kapellen, it is now Stabroek's turn. On the basis of a contextual information session and a bike ride through the agricultural area in Stabroek, you can become acquainted with the local military remains from the First World War.

“Almost 100 years on, we are still convinced that the events of 1914-1918 have a fundamental impact on our society. It is therefore good to thoroughly investigate the historical value of all elements in our region, without forgetting that the victims of this horrific war deserve a worthy memory," says Deputy for Culture Peter Bellens.

This initiative is part of the European Great War project , a cross-border collaboration with a view to commemorating the First World War in 2014.
